“Is someone among you ill? He should call for the elders of the congregation. They will pray for him and rub olive oil on him in the name of the Lord. The prayer offered with trust will heal the one who is ill — the Lord will restore his health; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.”
– James (Ya’akov) 5:14-15 CJB
Lately, I’ve found myself praying over many who are hurting—physically, emotionally, spiritually—and anointing them with oil as Scripture commands. But something struck me: not everyone understands why I do this. Some may see it as just a symbolic act or an outdated tradition—but it’s far more than that.
This is a holy moment. A moment of obedience. A moment where heaven meets earth.
The anointing of oil isn’t about the oil itself—it’s about the faith behind the prayer, the trust in God’s healing power, and the authority we stand in when we call on the name of the Lord. It’s not a ritual; it’s a release. A release of faith. A release of healing. A release of burdens.
James didn’t say “if someone’s sick, hope for the best.” He said call for the elders. Pray. Anoint. And believe.
We are called to action, not passivity. To faith, not fear. To restoration, not resignation.
So today, if you see someone praying over another and anointing them with oil, don’t wonder what’s going on—know that it’s Scripture in motion. It’s love in action. It’s the power of God meeting the pain of man.
And if you’re the one in need? Don’t hesitate. Reach out. There are elders and brothers in Christ ready to pray, anoint, and believe with you—because our God still heals, still restores, and still forgives.
Prayer:
Lord, remind us of the power of obedience and the authority You’ve given us through Your Word. Let us never forget that healing isn’t just possible—it’s promised to those who walk in faith. Amen.
