Are You the Parent Your Kids Need?

Scripture (CJB):

“Train a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

—Proverbs 22:6 (CJB)

Reflection:

Our children don’t need us to be their friends first—they need us to be their parents. Authority, structure, and discipline aren’t signs of a lack of love; they are expressions of it. Just as the Holy Spirit guides us, corrects us, and sometimes convicts us, parents are called to lead their children with wisdom and direction, even when it’s uncomfortable.

There will come a time when that relationship shifts—when your son or daughter becomes an adult and the bond deepens into something like brotherhood or sisterhood in Christ. When that time comes, it will be stronger because of the foundation you laid early on. But without guidance, boundaries, and correction, children are left to navigate a broken world without a compass.

Encouragement:

Parenting isn’t about being liked—it’s about being faithful. Lead with love, but don’t shy away from discipline. Speak truth with grace. Set boundaries with consistency. When you parent the way the Holy Spirit leads us—firm, patient, and full of love—you prepare your children not just for adulthood, but for a life rooted in Christ. “The Lord disciplines those He loves” (Hebrews 12:6). Today, choose to parent with purpose.
