Don’t Confuse Happiness with Joy
Since returning from Guatemala, I’ve found myself asking a question: Why did I feel so much happier there than I do here?
Maybe it’s because, like a vacation, we leave behind the pressures, responsibilities, and distractions of everyday life. On a mission trip, your focus shifts. You’re serving others. You’re grateful for what God has provided. Life becomes simpler, and your attention is fixed on what truly matters.
But the problems we left behind are still waiting for us when we return.
So why is it so much easier to set those burdens aside when we’re serving than when we’re home?
I believe it’s because this world pulls on us constantly. It distracts us, fills our minds with worries, and before long we begin to feel empty. If you’ve walked closely with Christ, you know that feeling. When you drift from Him, even a little, your heart notices. That distance is painful.
The mistake we often make is chasing happiness instead of seeking joy.
Happiness comes and goes with circumstances. Joy comes from Jesus.
Joy isn’t the absence of problems. It’s the confidence that Christ is walking through every problem with you. It’s knowing that no matter what you’re facing, He has not left you. When we stop trying to solve everything on our own and instead lean into Him, He gives us peace, direction, and strength that the world can never offer.
So if you’re feeling empty today… don’t go searching for happiness.
Search for Jesus.
Spend time with Him. Pray. Open His Word. Listen. He may be trying to show you something, guide you somewhere, or simply remind you that He has never left your side.
“You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy.” — Psalm 16:11
Don’t chase happiness.
Pursue the One who gives lasting joy.
