Don’t Let Your Past Define Your Future
“casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you.”
— 1 Peter 5:7 (CSB)
Sometimes the things we refuse to deal with become the very things that shape how we live.
We think if we don’t talk about them, they’ll go away.
If we stay busy enough, we won’t feel them.
If we push them far enough down, they won’t affect us.
But unresolved pain has a way of resurfacing.
It can show up in our anger.
In our silence.
In our inability to trust.
In the walls we build to keep people from getting too close.
And sometimes we’re so closed off that we don’t recognize what’s happening inside of us.
We see the argument, but we don’t see the hurt behind it.
We notice the distance, but we don’t understand why we keep pulling away.
We react to what’s happening today through the pain of something that happened years ago.
Before long, what we haven’t addressed begins affecting our relationships.
Our spouse feels it.
Our children feel it.
Our coworkers feel it.
And yes, it can even affect our relationship with Christ.
Because the same heart that struggles to trust others may also struggle to surrender fully to Him.
That’s what speaks to me about this verse.
Peter tells us to bring all our cares to God.
The hurt we don’t talk about.
The regret we keep replaying.
The disappointment we’ve buried.
The burden we’ve convinced ourselves we have to carry alone.
He cares about us—even in the places we’ve kept hidden.
But surrender requires honesty.
Sometimes our prayer needs to become, “Lord, this still hurts. This still affects me. And I need You to help me deal with it.”
Addressing our past may mean having a difficult conversation, asking for forgiveness, extending forgiveness, or reaching out for help.
We can take those steps while trusting Jesus to work in the places we cannot heal on our own.
Today, maybe our prayer can simply be:
Lord, show me what I’ve been avoiding.
Help me face what still hurts.
Keep my pain from shaping how I treat others.
Teach me to release these burdens to You.
And help me walk in the freedom You give.
Our past is part of our story.
But through Christ, it doesn’t have to define our future.
