Rest with Purpose
We live in a world that glorifies constant motion—pushing, striving, doing. And while Scripture calls us to put others’ needs before our own, it also reminds us that rest is not selfish, it’s sacred.
Even Jesus, in the midst of His ministry, withdrew to rest and pray (Luke 5:16). And in the very beginning, after six days of creation, God Himself rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2–3). If the Son of God and the Creator of the universe modeled rest, shouldn’t we also?
Rest is more than sleep. It’s recouping, refilling, and preparing yourself to walk in the calling God has placed on your life. Without it, we leave ourselves drained—physically, spiritually, and emotionally—and wide open for attack. That’s why it’s vital to listen to your body, to your spirit, and take time to recharge.
But here’s the balance: don’t confuse rest with laziness. True rest isn’t numbing yourself with the world’s distractions. It’s drawing near to God—through prayer, reading His Word, and building yourself up spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
So ask yourself today:
Am I resting in a way that restores me to be better for others and more prepared for God’s work in my life?
