Sit in the Silence

As I drove to work this morning, I had a choice. I could turn on worship music. I could listen to a sermon. Instead, I decided to simply talk to God.

I told Him everything that was on my heart. My worries. My gratitude. My questions.

Then, when I finished praying… I didn’t immediately move on.

I just sat in the silence.

Not because I was expecting an audible voice, but because I wanted to give God space to respond.

I think that’s the part of prayer we often miss.

We pray. We say, “In Jesus’ name, amen.” Then we turn the radio back on, open the next app, or move on to the next task. We invite God into the conversation, but we never pause long enough to listen.

“After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” — 1 Kings 19:12

When Elijah needed direction most, God didn’t speak through the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. He spoke through a gentle whisper. Sometimes God’s voice is easiest to hear when everything else is quiet.

Imagine a father whose child calls him every day. The child spends ten minutes telling Dad everything that’s happening, every concern, every victory, every request… then says, “Love you. Bye,” and hangs up before Dad can say a single word.

How heartbreaking would that be?

Yet that’s often how we approach prayer.

God loves hearing from us. He invites us to bring every burden, every praise, and every question to Him. But He also desires a relationship, not just a monologue. He wants to comfort us, guide us, convict us, and remind us that He’s with us. If we never make room for the silence, we may miss the gentle whisper He has been waiting to speak.

In a world that constantly competes for our attention, silence has become rare. But maybe that’s exactly why it’s so valuable.

Today, after you finish praying, don’t rush away.

Sit in the silence.

You may not hear words. You may simply experience His peace. A Scripture may come to mind. A burden may suddenly feel lighter. A next step may become clear.

Whatever the response looks like, remember this:

Sometimes the most powerful part of prayer isn’t what we say to God—it’s making space to hear what He’s wants to say to us.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for always listening when I come to You. Teach me not only to speak to You, but to slow down and listen. Quiet the noise around me and the distractions within me so I can recognize Your gentle whisper. Help me trust that even when I don’t hear an immediate answer, You are still present and still at work. May my prayer life become more than a list of requests—may it become a conversation that draws me closer to You each day.
