The Only Advantage

Scripture (Philippians 3:7–8, CJB):

“But the things that were once advantages for me, I have come to consider a disadvantage because of the Messiah. Not only that, but I consider everything a disadvantage in comparison with the supreme value of knowing Messiah Yeshua as my Lord.”

Reflection:

This verse hits hard if we’re honest with ourselves. Paul is saying the very things he once leaned on—his status, his credentials, his past successes—don’t mean a thing compared to knowing Jesus. Not just that they don’t matter as much, but that they actually become a disadvantage if they take His place. That’s heavy. Because a lot of us still cling to things we once thought were gifts, advantages, or proof that we were “doing good.” But without Christ at the center, those things don’t help us—they distract us.

Encouragement:

Here’s the truth: there is no real advantage in this life without Jesus. None. Everything else fades, shifts, or fails us eventually. But knowing Him changes everything. If God is stirring your heart to let go of something you’ve been holding onto for identity or security, trust Him. What you gain in Christ will always outweigh what you leave behind. Choose what lasts. Choose Him.
