As we drove to Missouri—back to the place we’ve returned to for 20 years—I find myself thinking of my father. This is the first time we’ve come here since he passed, and his memory is everywhere. He loved this place. It was more than a destination to him; it was sacred ground for family, for laughter, for stillness, and for legacy.
So often we say things like, “I can’t wait to get away,” or “I need a break from life.” But as I reflect, I realize something deeper: we’re not trying to get away from life—we’re trying to get back to what real life is all about. Not the busy schedules, the noise, or the chaos. Real life is sitting around a campfire, sharing stories. It’s early morning coffee with your spouse. It’s watching your kids smile. It’s remembering those who aren’t with you anymore and honoring them by continuing to make memories.
Vacation isn’t about escaping; it’s about reconnecting—with God, with family, with the parts of life that truly matter. It’s not about going solo, but about being present with those God has entrusted to you. Time is one of the greatest gifts we can give to the people we love.
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” —Psalm 90:12
So today, I challenge you—don’t run from life. Run toward what matters. Make memories. Be present. Love intentionally. And thank God for the people He’s placed on the journey with you.
