Thought of The Day

Today Is the Day

Today Is the Day

We spend so much of our lives looking in one of two directions—backward or forward. We replay yesterday’s mistakes, victories, and losses, or we fix our eyes on tomorrow, believing we’ll start living then. We’ll love more tomorrow. We’ll serve more tomorrow. We’ll share our faith tomorrow. We’ll make that phone call tomorrow. We’ll forgive tomorrow.

But the only day we’ve truly been given is today.

There’s nothing wrong with making plans for the future. In fact, Scripture encourages wisdom and preparation. But we must never become so focused on tomorrow that we miss the opportunities God has placed in front of us today. Likewise, we don’t erase our past—we learn from it. God uses our past to shape us, but He never intended for it to imprison us.

Recently, I was talking with my wife about my dad. After his second wife, Anna, passed away, he became stuck in that moment. The grief was so overwhelming that, in many ways, he stopped living. It took years of conversations before he finally realized that honoring her memory didn’t mean giving up on the life God had still given him. Eventually, he became excited again. He had decided to move in with us, and he was genuinely looking forward to that next chapter.

But he never got the chance.

The moment he had finally chosen to live again, his earthly life came to an end.

That experience has stayed with me because it reminds me how precious each day truly is. None of us are promised tomorrow. We often assume there will always be another opportunity, another conversation, another chance to love someone well, another day to obey God’s prompting. But someday, our “tomorrow” won’t come.

That’s why Paul writes:

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.”
— Ephesians 5:15–16 (NIV)

In Ephesians 5, Paul is encouraging believers to walk as children of light—to live intentionally in a dark world, reflecting Christ through every opportunity God gives us. He isn’t telling us to fill every moment with activity. He’s calling us to fill every moment with purpose.

The world tells us that truly living means chasing experiences, possessions, or personal fulfillment. Jesus teaches something very different.

True life is found in Him.

When Christ lives in you, your joy isn’t dependent on circumstances. It comes from knowing Him and allowing His love to flow through you into the lives of others. There is no greater fulfillment than watching God use your kindness to encourage someone who’s struggling, your forgiveness to restore a relationship, or your willingness to share the hope of Jesus with someone searching for meaning.

That’s living.

So don’t waste today longing for yesterday or waiting for tomorrow.

Learn from the past.

Prepare wisely for the future.

But live today exactly as God intended—loving Him, serving others, and making the most of every opportunity He places before you.

Because today is the day you’re living.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of today. Help me not to become trapped by yesterday or distracted by tomorrow. Teach me to learn from my past without living in it, and to plan wisely without placing my hope in the future.

Open my eyes to the opportunities You’ve placed before me today. Help me to love others well, serve with humility, and reflect the light of Christ in every conversation and every decision.

Remind me that true joy isn’t found in chasing what this world offers but in walking closely with You and allowing Your love to impact the lives of those around me.

May I never take this day for granted. Let me live today with purpose, gratitude, and faithfulness, trusting You with every tomorrow.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Today’s Challenge: Before the day ends, intentionally encourage someone, serve someone, or share the love of Christ with someone. Don’t wait for tomorrow to live the life God has given you today.
